The new Horizon Report has been published a week ago. The eighth edition edition of the annual report points out the emerging technologies that are supposed to have impact on learning and teaching in higher education. Six technologies are addressed that are supposed to influence these fields in the next one to five years:
- In a year or less: Electronic books and mobiles
- In two to three years: Augmented reality and game-based learning
- In four to five years: Gesture-based computing and learning analytics
Four of these technologies were also noted in the 2010 Horizon Report. An overview of the progress of trends from 2004 - 2011 you can find on weiterbildungsblog.de.
A completely new trend is the subject of learning analytics. Something that, in my opinion, is going to become highly relevant in combination with game-based learning: The game history as well as the player’s current scene deliver a lot of data and context to enrich user queries or deliver context-relevant help.
The Horizon Report is available for free online and released with a Creative Common’s license. A german version is not available yet but shall be published in cooperation with the Multimedia Kontor Hamburg.
